Spring in north-east Ohio arrives in fits and starts, and the work you do in March and April sets up the whole season. Here is the order we work in on our own customers’ properties.
1. Clean up before you feed
Rake out matted leaves and winter debris first. Fertilising over a layer of thatch just feeds the thatch.
2. Wait for soil temperature, not the calendar
Pre-emergent crabgrass control needs to go down when soil temperatures hit around 55°F, which in Canfield is usually mid to late April rather than the first warm weekend in March.
3. Sharpen the mower and raise the deck
A dull blade tears grass and invites disease. Start the season at a higher cut height to encourage deeper roots.
4. Fix bare patches early
Overseed thin areas while soil is moist and temperatures are mild. Wait until June and you are fighting heat and weed pressure.
